What Causes Uneven Skin Tone & How To Treat It

Does it seem like you’re always hearing about a product that can treat “uneven skin tone”? Do you ever wonder exactly what that means? More importantly, is it a problem that you may have?

Let’s take a closer look at precisely what uneven skin tone is, and what you can do about it if you have this condition and it’s been bothering you.

What Is Uneven Skin Tone?

At its simplest, “uneven skin tone” basically refers to any area of the skin that is darker than the skin surrounding it. This typically occurs when the skin produces excess melanin (the pigment that gives skin and hair its color).

This can manifest in the form of age spots, melasma, and/or post-inflammatory conditions.

Melasma looks like brown or grayish patches on the skin, usually located on the jaw, cheeks, or mid-face area.

Age spots look very similar to melasma, but are different because they are triggered by different things. Age spots are also typically smaller than melasma patches.

Post-inflammatory spots or patches can often appear after severe acne, an injury, a burn, an illness such as lupus, or eczema.

What Causes Uneven Skin Tone?

There are several factors that can cause you to have an uneven skin tone. Some of them include the following.

Sun exposure. When your skin is repeatedly exposed to the sun, melanin is produced in excess as the body’s way of attempting to protect you from UV light.

Pollution. Pollution in the air can often contribute to an uneven skin tone because airborne pollutants cling to the skin, corroding the protective surface. This weakens the skin and makes it much more vulnerable to sun damage.

Hormones. Melasma in particular is caused by increased hormone stimulation. This explains why so often pregnant women experience it.

How To Address Uneven Skin

Having an uneven skin tone is extremely common; however, many people who have it dislike its appearance and want to improve it. If this is you, here are a few options for things you can do.

Avoid sun exposure. When possible, stay out of the sun. we know that everyone loves a beach day, and besides it’s impossible to always stay out of the sun, but try to refrain from unnecessary sun exposure, especially without sunscreen. Which brings us to…

Apply SPF daily. The number one cause of hyperpigmentation (uneven skin tone) is sun exposure. However, if you apply sunscreen or a moisturizer with a broad spectrum SPF of at least 30 anytime you will be in the sun, you’ll help prevent new spots.

Have a treatment done. There are plenty of incredible cosmetic treatments available to help improve an uneven skin tone. Intense pulsed light treatments, chemical peels, laser therapies, and microdermabrasion procedures can have significant results. At Lazer Lounge our IPL photofacials are used specifically to help with uneven skin tone to create that perfect complexion that you’ve always wanted.

Try topical products. Many people have found success in improving their uneven skin tone by using topical treatments such as:

  • Azelaic acid
  • Corticosteroids
  • Hydroquinone
  • kojic acid
  • Retinoids
  • Vitamin C

Exfoliate. Getting rid of the surface layer of dead skin on your face will make way for the ingredients in your topical products to better penetrate the skin and get optimal results.

Try your luck with home remedies. Although there’s no surefire proven home remedies for an uneven skin tone, some people have had some luck with these home treatments.

Choose your ingredients wisely. Find products that have activated charcoal to help remove pollutants from your skin. Also look for oligopeptides, niacinamide, and zinc glycinate to help control melanin production, and anything with retinol to thicken and strengthen your skin.
